The main goal is to use an advanced technology in the field of heritage document analysis and restoration. At present, the analysis and restoration of the 3 physical components of the document (material, ink and binding) are made with traditional methods such as water or chemical reactants impregnation. Within the project, the partner institutions intend to develop methods and protocols to investigate documents based on non-destructive techniques (spectrometry, FTIR microscopy, Raman, UV- Vis, fluorescence, XRF) or micro-destructive techniques (laser ablation coupled ICP-MS and recovery protocols for faded documents based on microscopy techniques).
The results of such analyses will be used to create a standardization of the physical material of the documents and of the inks/pigments that were used, so that, apart from the complete analysis of the documents, an identification and a space-time positioning of documents with unknown characteristics can be done.
The innovation of the project consists in the creation of a database that is permanently updated. It will be the first in Romania to reunite the entire collection of analyses that will be helpful for the analysis of documents with uncertain or unknown characteristics. The beneficiaries of the database will be both the institutions and the persons that work with heritage documents, but also institutions or persons that work with documents that require an authentication analysis (cadastre, forensic science, notary office or law offices). Furthermore, a patent proposal will be transmitted which will include the recovery methodology for whitened documents though complexation and re-coloring.
